Living in Monroe, Washington: A Charming Rural Community in the Snohomish Valley

Every year at Labor Day, my family and I make our annual pilgrimage to Monroe, WA – home of the Washington State Evergreen State Fair.  This is one of my favorite summer events and not only can you watch a one-man-band play the harmonica, cymbals and kazoo, pet a Clydesdale and a miniature horse, watch “kid goats,” learn about honey bees, meet home orchardists, and see teens bedding down with calves in the straw, but you can vote on 4-H photo contests, see cat cage decorating contests, chat with children who have trained dogs in obediences, and learn how to spin wool.  

I love that there are so many free things to do here (after we’ve gotten in the main gate with the donation of some canned goods on Opening Day.   Yes their are rides, elephant ears, fried oreos and giant drumsticks, but to me, those are secondary to the true connection with my (wanna be) country roots that I get when I go to the fair.  If you’re a trad-wife, these are your people!

Finding The City Of Monroe

The city of Monroe, Washington, is a scenic and welcoming semi-rural small town located North East of Seattle in Snohomish County.  You’ll pass through on the way East on State Route 2, to Sultan and Gold Bar as you drive through the foothills of the Cascade Mountains traveling to Leavenworth, Washington State’s favorite Bavarian mountain town.  From there you can travel on to Wenatchee, or visit the small town of Cashmere, where my grandfather grew up, and birthplace of Washingtonian’s favorite candy to gift – the Applets and Cotlets factory.

If you love to ski, you can continue on to Stevens Pass, or Snoqualmie, which is further South, closer to Issaquah, WA  on I-90.

Enjoying Monroe, WA – Outdoors and In

My daughter and I used to find ourselves killing time once a week in Monroe or Duval (Locals call it “DOO-vall”) because my son was enjoying his recreational “outdoor school” in the great outdoor spaces beyond the Skykomish river and Woods Creek. We would drop him off at a state park or kindly stranger’s land, and he would be carted off into the woods with other hooligans, armed with a knife and waterproof matches, ready to build his own shelter and survive in the elements.

He participated with a couple of different schools that operated year round and were a source of muddy clothes, green lips (from eating dandelion and plantain and what has become a life-long love of camouflage clothing.  These wilderness schools were very well run, year-round affairs that would operate rain or shine and were a great solution to the sometimes solitary, sedentary indoor life of a homeschooled boy.

Because it was a long drive there and back, my daughter and I would hang out at the local library, duck in to a coffee shop for a bite for lunch, or hang out with our equestrian friends who had a family farm “in the country” 15 minutes out of town. 

The City Itself

Downtown Monroe is intersected by highways and has bit of a feel of a “truck stop town” with lots of fast food restaurants as well as Mom and Pop’s and Seattle’s ubiquitous Starbucks coffee shops.  Although it’s surrounded horse country, hobby farms, and even little cattle ranches, don’t expect you’re going to find too many cheap houses here.  Despite its blue collar reputation, I’ve had clients frustrated here looking for land and a fixer-upper at a half million dollar price point, and unable to find anything he could buy in a competitive market.

The town is located in the Snohomish Valley, approximately 33 miles northeast of downtown Seattle and when you get off the highway at the Fairgrounds you’ll see a fun tractor museum and the feed store where I have known to buy cheap little cheeping chicks, and giant bags of their “not-so-cheap” layer pellets!

Commuting From Monroe, WA

With a population of around 20,000 residents, living in Monroe offers a small-town feel with easy access to the amenities of larger cities.  Lots of contractors who come and fix up the houses start their trucks out here and drive into Seattle and Bellevue for work.  Traffic home in the evenings can be a real CRUSH.
