Family Guide to August

End of Summer in Seattle: Things to Do in August

Make the most of Seattle’s golden season with family-friendly events, outdoor adventures, farmers markets and simple August outings before school schedules and fall routines take over.

Summer is my favorite season. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I always feel like we have to enjoy that sunshine while we can. August is especially fun because the days are still long, the weather is often beautiful and there is still time to squeeze in a few more family adventures before fall.

If you are looking for family-friendly things to do in Seattle in August, you do not have to make every outing complicated. Some of the best summer days can be as simple as visiting a fair, spending an afternoon at the beach, taking a ferry ride, wandering through a farmers market or packing dinner for a picnic near the water.

This guide focuses on a mix of seasonal August events, outdoor family activities and local food experiences that can help you enjoy the end of summer together. Some are annual Seattle traditions, while others are easy outings you can come back to year after year.

August Family Traditions

Fairs, Festivals & Seasonal Family Events

August brings some of the Seattle area’s most memorable summer traditions. These are the kinds of outings that make it worth squeezing a little more fun out of summer before school schedules and fall routines take over.

Seafair Weekend

For many Seattle families, Seafair Weekend is one of the unmistakable signs that summer is in full swing. The celebration combines hydroplane racing on Lake Washington, an air show, live entertainment, food vendors and family activities around Genesee Park.

The event usually falls around the first weekend of August, although the exact dates shift each year. Even if you do not spend the entire day at the festival, seeing the hydroplanes and aircraft over Lake Washington is a very Seattle way to celebrate summer.

I think of Seafair as part of Seattle’s golden season. Long days, sunshine, Lake Washington and the excitement of the air show make it one of those events that really feels like summer here.

Evergreen State Fair

The Evergreen State Fair in Monroe is one of my favorite ways to mark the last days of summer. It combines carnival rides, fair food, livestock and agricultural exhibits, entertainment, competitions and all the classic sights and sounds you expect from a county fair.

The fair usually begins in late August and continues through Labor Day, making it an easy choice for one last big family outing before everyone settles into the school-year routine.

We have taken our own family to the Evergreen State Fair as part of our end-of-summer activities. It is one of those outings that works especially well with kids and teenagers because everyone can find something they enjoy.

CHOMP! is a family-friendly celebration of local food, farms, sustainability and community at Marymoor Park in Redmond. The annual event has included live music, local food vendors, farm stands, crafts, gardening activities, sustainability demonstrations and hands-on activities for children.

It is a nice alternative to a traditional carnival because families can spend the day outside while also learning more about local agriculture, food and the people who grow it.

Get Outside in August

Easy Outdoor Adventures for Seattle Families

Seattle really shines when the sun is out, and August is the perfect time to spend as much of the day outside as possible. You do not need a complicated itinerary. A beach afternoon, picnic, splash park, ferry ride or even one last camping trip can turn the final weeks of summer into some of your favorite family memories.

Seattle’s Golden Season

Long Days, Short Sleeves & Lots of Time Outside

Whether you just moved to Seattle or are visiting for the summer, this really is Seattle’s golden season. The long days make it easy to fit in outdoor adventures before dinner, after work or on a relaxed weekend.

In this video I highlight Seafair, outdoor concerts and movies, Green Lake, Alki Beach, splash pads and easy camping getaways such as Lake Wenatchee and Deception Pass.

You definitely do not need to do all of them. Pick what sounds fun and take advantage of the beautiful weather while it is here.

Spend an Afternoon at Golden Gardens

A warm August afternoon at Golden Gardens is about as classic as Seattle summer gets. Families can walk along the beach, build sandcastles, bring a picnic, visit the playground or stay for a sunset over Puget Sound.

It is one of those places where you can plan a full afternoon or simply stop by for an hour and still feel like you did something special.

Walk + Picnic

Explore Discovery Park

Discovery Park gives families a chance to feel like they have escaped the city without actually leaving Seattle. You can wander through meadows and forest, enjoy Puget Sound views, pack a picnic or choose a shorter portion of the trail system that works for your family.

With beaches, bluffs, open lawns and wooded areas, you can make this outing as active or relaxed as you want.

Cool Off at a Wading Pool or Spray Park

On a hot August afternoon, Seattle’s neighborhood spray parks and seasonal wading pools can be an easy outing for younger kids. Because they are spread throughout the city, you may not have to travel far to turn an ordinary afternoon into a water day.

You can also pair water play with a walk around Green Lake, a playground visit or a picnic nearby.

Good to know: Seasonal schedules can vary by location and weather, so check Seattle Parks before heading out.

Take a Ferry Ride

One of my favorite Seattle summer ideas is also one of the simplest: get on a ferry. For kids, the ferry itself can be part of the adventure, with open-water views, passing boats and the Seattle skyline disappearing behind you.

The Seattle to Bainbridge Island route is especially easy for a family day trip. Walk onto the ferry downtown, explore Bainbridge for a few hours and then enjoy the ride back across Puget Sound.

One Bigger Summer Adventure

Plan One Last Summer Camping Trip

If your family wants one slightly bigger adventure before summer ends, August can be a wonderful time to squeeze in a night or weekend of camping. You do not have to travel across the state to find beautiful scenery, water and trails.

Two of my favorite ideas for a classic Washington summer getaway are Lake Wenatchee and Deception Pass.

Lake Wenatchee State Park

Think mountain scenery, a glacier-fed lake, swimming, paddling, hiking and plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors. It is a great choice if you want your camping trip to feel like a real mountain getaway.

Explore Lake Wenatchee State Park →

Deception Pass State Park

Deception Pass combines forest, beaches, dramatic water views and the iconic bridges connecting Whidbey and Fidalgo islands. Families can camp, explore the shoreline and choose from a variety of trails and outdoor activities.

Explore Deception Pass State Park →
Plan ahead: Summer campsites can be popular. Check campsite availability, park alerts, wildfire conditions and current burn restrictions before leaving home.

My favorite approach is to keep it simple. Not every summer adventure needs to involve a full weekend away. Pick one destination, bring some snacks or a picnic, and leave enough time to enjoy being outside. And if you do have room for one last camping trip, it can be a pretty memorable way to say goodbye to summer.

Fresh From Washington

Taste the Best of Seattle in August

August is peak season for farmers markets, colorful flowers and locally grown produce around Seattle. Visiting a market or farm is an easy family outing, especially when you let the kids choose something new to bring home for dinner or eat along the way.

A Seattle Summer Classic

Pike Place Market in August

Pike Place Market is fun year-round, but August is an especially colorful time to visit. Washington farmers bring in peak-season fruits and vegetables, while the Market’s flower stalls are overflowing with late-summer bouquets.

For families, I like that you can make the outing as short or as elaborate as you want. Pick up fruit, watch the fishmongers, grab lunch or a treat, explore the Market and then continue down toward the Seattle waterfront.

Summer programming can also include evening farmers markets, chef demonstrations, live music and special August celebrations. Check the Market calendar for the current schedule.

Neighborhood Outing

Visit a Neighborhood Farmers Market

You do not have to go downtown to enjoy a great Seattle farmers market. Neighborhood markets make an easy August morning or afternoon outing, with Washington-grown produce, flowers, baked goods, local foods and plenty to browse.

A few markets that are especially easy to work into a family weekend include:

University District: Saturdays, year-round
West Seattle: Sundays, year-round
Phinney: Friday afternoons during the summer season
Magnolia: Saturdays during the summer season

Phinney is particularly family-friendly because the market is next to a playground, making it easy to combine grocery shopping, dinner and some playtime in one stop.

Farm Adventure

Pick Your Own Berries & Flowers

If you want to turn grocery shopping into an actual summer adventure, head outside the city for a U-pick farm. August can be a wonderful time for blueberries, blackberries and late-summer flowers, depending on the year’s growing season.

One option is Indigo Skies Farm in the Snoqualmie Valley near Carnation. The certified-organic farm offers U-pick blueberries and seasonal flowers, with room to wander the rows, bring a picnic and slow down for an afternoon in the country.

Location: 7125 W Snoqualmie Valley Road NE, Carnation, WA 98014
Season: Typically summer, depending on berry and flower availability

Crop conditions can change quickly, so always check the farm’s website or social updates before making the drive.

Before Summer Slips Away

Make a Little End-of-Summer Bucket List

Not every August memory has to come from a major event. Sometimes the best way to enjoy the last days of summer is to pick a few simple things you still want to do together before school, sports and fall schedules take over.

A Little Inspiration From My Family

The Last Days of Summer Always Go Fast

Summer is my favorite season, so by August I always start thinking about what we still want to squeeze in before school schedules and fall routines take over.

One year, our own last stretch of summer included visiting the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, spending time around Lake Washington and Kirkland for my birthday, watching the kids head back to school, and attending a formal event on a ferry on Lake Washington.

None of those things had to be part of one perfect itinerary. That is what I like about August. A few sunny afternoons, a favorite family outing and one or two simple traditions can be enough to make the end of summer feel special.

Have One Last Summer Picnic

Pick up something easy for dinner, find a park or a spot near the water and eat outside. It does not need to be elaborate to feel like a special summer evening.

Stay Out Until Sunset

Take advantage of the remaining long evenings. Walk along Lake Washington, spend some time in Kirkland, get ice cream or simply stay at the park a little later than usual.

Watch an Outdoor Movie

Bring blankets, snacks and a sweatshirt and enjoy one of the outdoor movie nights that pop up around Seattle and the Eastside during summer.

Let the Kids Choose the Adventure

Give everyone a turn choosing one final summer activity. It could be a beach, playground, ferry ride, farmers market, splash park or favorite place for dessert.

Take an End-of-Summer Family Photo

August gives you beautiful outdoor backdrops around Seattle. Take a family picture at the beach, beside Lake Washington, at a park or during one of your outings before everyone settles back into the school routine.

Celebrate Going Back to School

The end of summer does not have to mean the fun is over. Mark the transition with a favorite dinner, ice cream or another small tradition that gives everyone something to look forward to.

You do not need to finish the whole list. Pick one or two things your family would genuinely enjoy. The point is simply to notice that summer is winding down and make a little space to enjoy it together before the season changes.

Before You Head Out

Planning Family Activities in Seattle in August

August is usually an easy month for getting outside around Seattle, but a little planning can make family outings much more enjoyable. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about enjoying the end of summer.

What are the best family-friendly things to do in Seattle in August?

Some of my favorite choices are a mix of special events and simple outdoor outings. Consider the Evergreen State Fair, Seafair, a farmers market morning, Golden Gardens, Discovery Park, a ferry ride, a splash park or an outdoor movie.

You really do not need to fill every day with a major attraction. August is also a great month for a picnic, an evening by Lake Washington or simply staying outside until sunset.

Is August a good time to visit Seattle with kids?

Yes. August is one of the easiest times of year to build a Seattle itinerary around outdoor activities. Families can combine parks, beaches, ferries, markets and seasonal events without needing to spend the entire day indoors.

It is also a nice time for visiting families because the long summer days give you more flexibility to fit several activities into one day without feeling rushed.

What are some free or inexpensive family activities in August?

Seattle has plenty of options that do not require an expensive ticket. Good choices include:

  • Golden Gardens or Alki Beach
  • Discovery Park
  • Green Lake
  • Neighborhood playgrounds
  • Spray parks and seasonal wading pools
  • Farmers markets
  • Outdoor concerts and movies
  • A picnic near Lake Washington

Even a ferry ride can be a relatively simple outing if you walk on instead of bringing the car.

What should we bring for an August outing in Seattle?

Seattle summer days can be warm, but evenings near the water often cool down. I would usually bring sunscreen, water, sunglasses and an extra layer even when the afternoon forecast looks beautiful.

For outdoor movies or evening events, a sweatshirt or light jacket and a blanket can make a big difference once the sun goes down.

What about wildfire smoke or unusually hot weather?

August weather is not always predictable. On very hot days, consider shifting your plans toward water activities, shaded parks or morning and evening outings.

Wildfire smoke can occasionally affect air quality in the Puget Sound region as well. If conditions look hazy, check the current air-quality forecast before spending several hours outside, especially with young children or anyone who is sensitive to smoke.

Do we need to buy tickets for August events in advance?

It depends on the event. Beaches, parks and most farmers markets do not require tickets, but fairs, concerts, special performances and some outdoor movie programs may have admission charges or advance reservations.

For a major August event, I recommend checking the official website before leaving home so you can confirm the current schedule, parking information and ticket requirements.

Are Seattle farmers markets open in August?

Yes. August is one of the most enjoyable times to visit local farmers markets because both year-round and seasonal markets are operating. It is also peak season for many Washington fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Market days and hours can change, so check the individual market schedule before heading out.

Do these family activities continue after August?

Many do. Parks, beaches, ferry trips and farmers markets can still be wonderful in September, and some late-summer fairs and festivals continue through Labor Day.

The transition into September can actually be a nice time to keep enjoying Seattle outdoors, especially once school starts and some popular places become a little quieter during the week.

i

One Last August Reminder

Check before you go. Seasonal hours, event dates, water-feature schedules, ferry service and weather conditions can all change. A quick check of the official website before leaving home can save a disappointing trip.

One More Summer Adventure

Make the Most of the Last Days of Summer

August always seems to go by faster than I expect. One minute we are enjoying long evenings and sunny weekends, and the next we are thinking about school schedules, cooler mornings and everything that comes with fall.

That is why I like the idea of choosing just a few things to enjoy before summer winds down. Maybe it is the fair, an afternoon at the beach, a trip to a farmers market, a ferry ride or simply dinner outside with your family. You do not need a packed calendar to make the end of summer memorable.

Seattle really does shine during this season, so enjoy the sunshine while we have it and make a little time for the people and places you love.
