The days are long, people are outside, neighborhoods feel more social, and there are so many ways to celebrate without needing to make the day complicated.

For our family, the Fourth has always been less about having the perfect itinerary and more about being together, getting outside and doing something that feels a little different from an ordinary summer day.

Sometimes that means fireworks. Sometimes it is a parade, time near the water, food with family or friends, or simply staying out later than usual because it is still light outside.

Everett is a strong choice if you want both a traditional community celebration and a waterfront fireworks show.

Celebrate Kirkland

Kirkland’s celebration is built around the parade itself rather than an evening fireworks show.

Gas Works Park sits directly on the north shore of Lake Union and is one of Seafair’s official event locations. The setting combines the lake, Seattle skyline and the park’s industrial structures with the main fireworks show.

This is not simply a place to stop by shortly before the fireworks. Seafair builds an afternoon and evening event around the park, and large crowds arrive well before dark.

A Seattle Fourth of July can be a long day, especially if you are staying for fireworks after spending the afternoon outside.

The easiest approach is to think through three things before you leave home: how you are getting there, how comfortable you will be for several hours, and how you are getting home once thousands of other people start leaving at the same time.

No. The sale, possession, use and discharge of fireworks are prohibited within the City of Seattle unless specifically authorized by a Seattle Fire Department permit.

That includes common consumer fireworks. Seafair also prohibits visitors from bringing sparklers, fireworks or other incendiary materials into its Fourth of July event areas.

Yes. Seafair typically includes daytime family activities, food and entertainment in addition to the nighttime fireworks.

The bigger question may be whether your children are comfortable with a long day, a very large crowd and a fireworks show that does not begin until late.

For younger children, a hometown parade in Edmonds, Kirkland, Bothell or another nearby community may be an easier daytime Fourth of July tradition.

06 Can I bring my dog to the Seafair Fourth of July event? +

Seafair currently prohibits pets and other animals inside its event areas, with an exception for qualifying service animals.
