Auburn Veterans Day Parade & Observance

If you are looking for the biggest Veterans Day celebration near Seattle, Auburn is the place to start. The city has hosted its Veterans Parade since 1965, and the celebration has grown into one of the largest Veterans Day parades of its kind in the country.

The parade typically includes veterans organizations, active-duty military personnel, honor guards, marching bands, military vehicles, ROTC groups and community organizations. In 2026, organizers expect more than 150 parade units and thousands of participants.

The parade is only one part of a full day of activities. Past celebrations have also included a veterans breakfast, displays, a veterans luncheon and an afternoon marching band competition.

Emily’s Tip: This is probably the best choice for families who want a traditional Veterans Day parade experience. Arrive early because downtown parking and traffic can get busy before the parade begins.

For a quieter and more reflective Veterans Day experience, Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in North Seattle is one of the most meaningful places to visit.

The Veterans Memorial Cemetery contains rows of veterans’ graves surrounding its distinctive Chimes Tower. Veterans Day observances have included community flag placement and a remembrance service honoring those who served.

It can be a particularly meaningful experience for families with older children who want to learn more about local military history and the people from our region who served in the Armed Forces.

Good to Know: This is a place of remembrance as well as an event location. Visitors should be respectful of families who may be visiting loved ones buried at the cemetery.

University of Washington Veterans Day Ceremony

The University of Washington holds an annual Veterans Day ceremony at its Medal of Honor Memorial on the Seattle campus.

The ceremony brings together veterans, students, alumni, university leaders and members of the community. Past programs have featured the Husky Marching Band, student veterans, ROTC participants and presentation of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Veteran Award.

The location itself is worth seeing. The Medal of Honor Memorial recognizes eight University of Washington alumni who received the nation’s highest military honor.

Make It a History Lesson: Before or after the ceremony, walk along Memorial Way. Several memorials on the UW campus recognize students, faculty and alumni who served in America’s wars.

North of Seattle, Mill Creek hosts both a commemorative Veterans Day ceremony and a community parade.

The morning begins at the Veterans Monument at Library Park. The parade follows later in Mill Creek Town Center and traditionally includes veterans and their families, color guards, marching bands, vintage vehicles, military vehicles and local community groups.

This is another particularly good option for families because the parade has a community feel and is easy to combine with lunch or other activities around Mill Creek Town Center.

What to Bring: Bring folding chairs, dress for November weather and arrive early enough to find parking before Main Street closures begin.

The City of SeaTac hosts a community Veterans Day ceremony at its Veterans Memorial next to the SeaTac Community Center.

The ceremony honors military veterans of the past and present. The memorial incorporates engraved granite tiles recognizing individual veterans, and the names newly added to the memorial are traditionally read during the Veterans Day program.

This smaller community ceremony can be a good choice for anyone looking for a meaningful observance without the crowds of a larger parade.

The museum offers discounted admission to active-duty military members and veterans throughout the year. The discount also extends to certain accompanying adults and children.

The Aquarium offers discounted admission to active, retired and veteran U.S. military personnel. The military discount is available at the Aquarium’s admission gates with appropriate identification.

A visit now includes both the original waterfront aquarium experience and the newer Ocean Pavilion, making this an easy activity to combine with Pike Place Market, the Seattle waterfront and the Overlook Walk.

The Seattle Art Museum is another good indoor option for Veterans Day, especially if you are already spending the day downtown.

SAM offers reduced general admission for military visitors with identification. Children age 14 and younger are also admitted free to the museum’s permanent and special exhibitions under its current admission policy.

You can easily combine SAM with Pike Place Market, the waterfront or the nearby Olympic Sculpture Park for a larger downtown Seattle outing.

My recommendation: check the restaurant’s own website or call the specific Seattle-area location before making a special trip. National promotions do not always apply at every franchise location.

Veterans Day can be more than a day off from school or work. It can also be an opportunity to help kids understand what military service means, learn some local history and find thoughtful ways to say thank you.

Walk UW’s Memorial Way & Medal of Honor Memorial

You don’t have to attend a formal ceremony to explore some fascinating military history right in Seattle.

Start at Memorial Way, the historic entrance to the University of Washington campus. The tree-lined boulevard and surrounding memorials recognize UW students, faculty, staff and alumni who served in America’s wars.

At the end of Memorial Way, near Kane Hall, you’ll find the Medal of Honor Memorial. The memorial recognizes eight University of Washington alumni who received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration for valor.

Conversation starter for kids: What do courage, service and sacrifice mean? You don’t have to focus only on battles. Talk about the idea of choosing to serve other people and your community.

Visit Tahoma National Cemetery

For older children and teens, a quiet visit to Tahoma National Cemetery can help make the meaning of military service much more tangible.

The national cemetery is the final resting place for veterans and eligible family members, set among the forests of South King County with views toward Mount Rainier.

Rather than treating the cemetery like another sightseeing stop, consider slowing down and looking at a few headstones together. Notice the different military branches, conflicts, ranks and dates represented.

Turn it into a history activity: The Department of Veterans Affairs also operates the Veterans Legacy Memorial, where families can look up veterans and learn more about their military service.
A note for families:

Tahoma is an active national cemetery, not an attraction. Keep voices low, give funeral processions plenty of space and remind children not to disturb flowers, flags or memorial items.

Write a Thank-You Note or Preserve a Veteran’s Story

✏️ A simple Veterans Day activity for any age

One of the easiest Veterans Day activities doesn’t require tickets, a drive or even good Seattle weather.

Have your children write a card or short note thanking a veteran they know. Younger kids can draw pictures, while older children might write about something they have learned about military service.

If you have a veteran in your family, Veterans Day can also be a wonderful opportunity to ask about their experiences.

  • Why did you decide to serve?
  • Which branch of the military were you in?
  • Where did you live or travel while serving?
  • What do you remember most about your time in the military?
  • What is something you wish people understood about military service?
One idea I really like: Record the conversation on your phone, with the veteran’s permission. Years from now, that family history may be far more valuable than you realize.
If you’d like to deliver cards to veterans you don’t personally know, contact a veterans organization, retirement community or local program first to find out what they accept and how items should be delivered.

Why Is Veterans Day on November 11?

The fighting in World War I stopped with an armistice that took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

November 11 was originally commemorated as Armistice Day. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to recognize American veterans of all wars.

Today, Veterans Day honors all Americans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

This may be my favorite military-history day trip from Seattle because the transportation is part of the experience.

Walk onto the Seattle-Bremerton ferry downtown, enjoy the ride across Puget Sound, and arrive within walking distance of two excellent naval attractions.

The Puget Sound Navy Museum explores more than a century of naval history in the Pacific Northwest, including the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, aircraft carriers, submarines and what everyday life is like for sailors.

Families should look for the museum’s Family Discovery Room, which includes hands-on activities and a yellow submarine designed especially for children.

STOP 2

USS Turner Joy

Just a short walk along the waterfront, you can climb aboard the USS Turner Joy, a preserved U.S. Navy destroyer that served during the Cold War and Vietnam War.

Visitors can explore areas of the ship and get a much better sense of how sailors lived and worked aboard a Navy destroyer. Be prepared for steep ladders, narrow passageways and plenty of climbing.

Emily’s Tip: Leave the car in Seattle if you can. Both museums are within easy walking distance of the Bremerton ferry terminal, so you can turn this into a waterfront adventure without worrying about driving onto the ferry.

U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport

If submarines, diving, torpedoes or underwater technology sound interesting, put the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum on your list.

The museum explores the history and technology of the Navy’s undersea operations. Visitors can step into a submarine control room, learn about submarine rescue and escape, explore torpedo technology and see vehicles used for underwater research, recovery and military operations.

Good news for civilian visitors:

Although the museum sits on Naval Base Kitsap property, visitors do not need base access to visit. Admission and parking are free.

Best for: Kids and adults who love submarines, engineering and technology. This is one of those museums that can appeal just as much to a curious 10-year-old as it does to a military-history enthusiast.

Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis-McChord

The Lewis Army Museum tells the story of Camp Lewis, Fort Lewis and the role the U.S. Army has played in the exploration, defense and development of the Pacific Northwest.

The museum is housed in the historic Red Shield Inn and is the only certified U.S. Army Museum on the West Coast.

Exhibits include military uniforms, weapons, vehicles, unit histories and immersive displays covering Army service from the early history of Camp Lewis through modern conflicts.

The museum is located inside Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Visitors without military credentials need to follow JBLM’s current visitor procedures and obtain authorization to enter the installation.

Plan this one carefully: Museum hours are limited and Veterans Day is a federal holiday. Check both museum hours and current JBLM visitor-access requirements before driving south.

Explore the Historic Gun Batteries at Fort Worden

If your family would rather explore outside than spend the entire day inside a museum, head to Fort Worden Historical State Park in Port Townsend.

Fort Worden was part of a system of coastal defenses built around the entrance to Puget Sound around the turn of the twentieth century. Visitors can still walk through concrete gun batteries, explore military buildings and see the strategic views that made this location so important.

The park also includes the Coast Artillery Museum, where you can learn more about the weapons and fortifications that defended the region from the late 1800s through World War II.

The Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum offers another perspective, showing what family life was like for Army officers stationed at Fort Worden during the early twentieth century.

Make a full day of it: Combine the fort with lunch in Port Townsend, a walk along the beach and a stop at Point Wilson. November weather can be wet and windy, so bring layers and rain gear.
A Washington State Discover Pass is generally required for vehicle parking at the state park. Individual museum hours can be more limited than park hours.

Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum

Aviation lovers should head north to Paine Field for the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum.

The museum’s collection focuses on military aviation, armored vehicles and the technology of twentieth-century conflicts. Its collection includes historic aircraft and military vehicles from the United States and several other countries.

What makes this museum particularly interesting is that many of the aircraft are maintained with an emphasis on historical authenticity and operational condition rather than simply being static displays.
