Why I Love Washington State
Leavenworth, a Lake Wenatchee Cabin and Tulips
Washington is a beautiful state, and our family never gets tired of Leavenworth. It is our favorite getaway. We also have a family cabin out by Lake Wenatchee, and in the winter we head for the Cascade Mountains to ski. Cute small towns pop up all over the state, and every spring we make the drive up to the tulip fields in Skagit Valley, north of Snohomish County, to wander through the rows of color.
Why We Are the Evergreen State
Drive east over the Cascades and everything changes. The east side of the state is dry and agricultural, while the west side is rainy and green. The best crop on the west side is evergreen trees. Logging was a huge business in Western Washington back in the day, and big companies like Weyerhaeuser played a major role. Those big trees are still farmed on something like a 50-year cycle, which is a long time to wait for a harvest.
Every year we go to the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, and one thing we always see is the historic logging show, which has been a family-run operation for about 40 years. They race to saw a log in half, climb a 60-foot pole to ring a bell way up in the air, and do log rolling in the water, trying to dunk the other guy. It is a blast, and it is a good reminder that logging is a big part of Western Washington’s story. Those evergreen forests are in fact why we are called the Evergreen State.
Plenty to Do Outside
If you live in Seattle, you never run out of things to do outdoors. You can go boating, hike on Mount Rainier, or drive east of the Cascades for a totally different kind of scenery. Leavenworth is a favorite for getting out of town. Snoqualmie Falls is even closer, and the Salish Lodge is built right at the edge of the falls, so you can spend the night and have breakfast with a waterfall outside.
Spokane, Pullman and the Tri-Cities
We have a rental property over in Spokane. We also took a tour of Washington State University in Pullman with my son, to see if it might be the right campus for him. It was beautiful, and we enjoyed the tour.
If you ever find yourself in the Tri-Cities, take a tour of the B Reactor at Hanford, near Richland, where plutonium for the first atomic bombs was made. It is a really cool place to visit. Check the Hanford B Reactor site for tour dates before you go.
Cashmere: My Family’s Hometown
My grandfather grew up in Cashmere, and his father was one of the co-founders of Cashmere Valley Bank. The bank was founded in the years after World War I and made its name funding the local farmers in that area. It is still around today. We still go back to visit, and once we rode in the Founders Day parade as descendants of the founders.
Whenever we go, we stop at the Aplets and Cotlets factory. It is a local specialty candy based on old-world Turkish delight, developed by immigrants who adapted their family’s recipe to the local flavors of apricots, apples, pears, cherries and more from the orchardists in the area.
A Network Across the State
I have a wide network of contacts all over the place, and I am happy to vet and find agents to help you relocate. For example, there is a great agent in Spokane that we have worked with several times. That agent has helped me buy rental property there, helped my sister buy rental property there, and helped my clients from Everett who relocated to Spokane find the perfect house for them.
Wherever you are in Washington, call me. I would love to help with your sale, or match you with the right local agent for your purchase.
